Steve’s Story
DIFFERENT BEGINNINGS
My story in becoming the managing director of MK&S Constructions really is very different than most.
A PEOPLE PERSON FROM THE START
Growing up I always loved people. I loved relating, laughing, learning, and doing life with people. I don’t know if it was because, my dad had moved overseas when I was only 5 years old, but I do know that, for whatever reason, I’ve been a people person my whole life. And yet the most important person I ever met was Jesus when I was 14 years old in high school (now stay with me here, because this does definitely matter!)
EVERYTHING CHANGED
Jesus showed me that everyone has intrinsic value being made by God. People are valuable not because of what they do, or say, or believe, but simply because they’re intrinsically valuable to God. And this changes everything for me. It’s the reason that I went to bible college up until 2018, it’s why I became a truck driver to support my wife Rebecca once I finished college, it’s why we decided to foster our oldest 3 kids, and it’s also why I decided to dive into the construction industry and start MK&S Constructions with my father-in-law, Geoff.
THE PLANTING OF SEEDS
After working with Geoff in his own building company, Meyer Constructions, for more than 30 years, and Geoff decided to work for a bigger commercial builder rather than for himself. This was when the seeds were planted to be a part of something different. I saw more and more how construction workers were/are often treated. Mostly like rubbish, as merely a number to just make them money at all costs. Sometimes their accomplishments and expertise were acknowledged, but mostly they were disregarded and overlooked. So you could imagine my reaction when, with my belief in people’s intrinsic value in tow, I saw my father-in-law, the master builder with 40 years of experience, get demoted from supervisor to a mere handyman with a pay-cut to boot. Things had to be better than this.
A NEW VISION
I founded MK&S Constructions to be first and foremost a tool that honours and values people in all stages and aspects of the construction industry, not merely the prospective clients so as to win their work, but everyone. I believe the high school apprentices, labourers on the ‘business-end’ of a broom, the subcontractors, the clients, the certifiers, the governments officials and anyone in between, are all valuable and should be honoured as such. I run MK&S with this belief as it’s foundation and cornerstone; make sure everyone we come into contact with is honoured and valued. Hence why I made Geoff the Co-Director and Construction Manager, because he’s bloody good at what he does, and because I genuinely Iove the guy.
MY FAMILY
My wife, Rebecca and I live in North Western Sydney, and have five beautiful children, Summah, Noah, Savannah, William, and Elias (yes, it’s a big family but there’s an even bigger story behind it that I can’t wait to share with you when we meet!)
Geoff’s Story
I don’t talk as much as Steve, so this won’t be nearly as long.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
I did my apprenticeship in Tumut in the 1970s and finished it in Chatswood and Roseville Joinery in Sydney and have been working in the construction industry ever since.
MOVE TO SYDNEY
Caroline and I married in 1982 and we move to a small workers cottage in North Western Sydney which began our love for renovating and extending homes with classical charm.
LEGACY BEGINS
We founded Meyer Construction in 1983 with the focus on renovating character homes throughout Sydney. The bulk of our work being completed around the Epping and Eastwood areas of Northern Sydney.
SATISFACTION OF A JOB WELL DONE
I’ve always enjoyed creating the nicest of spaces for families to enjoy and do life together. It’s something I love now at the back-end of my career and I hope we can continue that legacy long after I’m gone.
